Leading with purpose: why it matters more than ever for brokers

AFG 17 February 2026 12:50:54 PM

In a market shaped by constant change, including interest rate movements, shifting borrower expectations, and economic pressure, it’s easy to focus purely on outcomes. At our latest AFG Next conference, Lisa MacCallum drew attention to something less tangible, yet increasingly important: purpose.

Not as a slogan or strategy, but as something that shows up quietly in how businesses operate, communicate, and support their customers. Her keynote highlighted several key ways purpose is influencing borrower relationships and broker businesses today.

Borrowers are choosing more than a loan

Today’s borrowers aren’t just comparing rates or turnaround times. They are paying closer attention to the businesses they deal with, how they behave, how clearly, they communicate, and whether they feel aligned with what that business stands for.

Across industries, consumers are gravitating towards organisations that feel authentic, consistent, and transparent. In mortgage broking, that focus naturally extends beyond the loan itself to the experience surrounding it.

How purpose shows up in everyday interactions

Purpose is rarely something clients are explicitly told. More often, it’s something they experience. It shows up in how brokers communicate during stressful moments, how they respond when things don’t go to plan, and how present they remain beyond settlement. Small, considered interactions, the ones that happen day to day, often leave the strongest impressions. Over time, these experiences shape how clients remember the relationship.

Looking beyond the transaction

When purpose is clearly understood, the focus naturally broadens beyond simply completing a transaction. Attention shifts to the overall experience, how clients feel throughout the process, and how supported they are along the way. As highlighted in the keynote, this way of working often underpins consistency, empathy, and long-term connection, without needing to be consciously driven.

Why clarity of purpose sets the tone

Lisa also spoke about the role clarity plays when purpose is well understood. Where purpose is clear, expectations tend to be clearer too. Clarity around why a business exists, who it serves, and the role it plays in clients’ lives often influences how conversations are framed and how decisions are made. It can also shape how confidently a business shows up, particularly when situations are complex or uncertain. For clients, that clarity helps establish trust and familiarity, even before outcomes are delivered.

A quiet but powerful differentiator

Brokers who lead with purpose tend to stand out quietly. Not through bold claims or big statements, but through reliability, care, and the experience they create.

Clear purpose.

Genuine connection.

Thoughtful action.

These are often the things clients remember and return for.
